Pair of Roman North African Terracotta Oil Lamps

Roman, North Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A fine group of two mold-formed redware terracotta oil lamps with circular bases, wide walls, recessed tondos, tab-shaped handles, a pair of wick spouts, and wide wick spouts. The first lamp has a fret-adorned shoulder that surrounds an image of the god Mars in the tondo. The largest lamp features a similarly decorated shoulder, however the tondo displays a six-pointed star; the foot also bears a trio of impressed lines. Lucite display stands for photography purposes only. Size of largest (six-pointed star): 5.25" L x 3.375" W (13.3 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired on July 18, 2011; ex-Arte Primitivo auction, New York, New York, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.

Condition Report: Lamp with Mars has losses to handle as shown; larger lamp is intact and very good. Both items have minor encrustations and abrasions, with softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
