Pair of heads of winged angels - Carved and polychrome wood - 19th century

Pair of angel heads, in carved and polychromed wood. 19th century. Spain. Measures: 30 x 25 cm 35 x 21 cm During the 19th century, various movements took place which sought to recover art and the artistic techniques and crafts of the past. Historicism confronts the academic institutions of their time and dive into the past fleeing from an industrialized, prosaic, materialistic world, seeking authenticity, sentiment, expression. In this way, a series of artists emerged who fixed their gaze on the past, both in architecture and in painting, sculpture and decorative arts. Especially important was the impact of historicism on the religious arts, since it was considered the highest and purest religiosity of the past, the most authentic, and its plastic expressions of greater spiritual content. These two heads of angels or putti, of the seraph or cherub type, are undoubtedly inspired by Baroque imagery. The figures of little angels, represented as young children, naked, or as winged children's heads, as in this case, were included in numerous baroque altarpieces as an iconographic and decorative complement in many scenes, or as decoration together with the architectural elements. In this case, the figures, with plump cheeks and delicate features, have curly blond hair and wings arranged asymmetrically, seeking movement, polychrome in various colours that contrast beautifully with the flesh colour and golden
