Panamanian Chiriqui Jade Pendant - Squatting Deity

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Chiriqui culture, ca. 500 to 1200 CE. An incredibly-preserved pale blue-green jade anthropomorphic pendant, the deity figure wearing a crown adorned by a trophy head and squatting with hands placed over chest as if engaged in a ritual or prayer - the overall form being celt-shaped. The features are finely string-cut and delineated in bas relief - with drilled eyes, triangular nose, furrowed brow marks, delineated fingers, upraised knees, and toes. The pendant may have been worn suspended through the eyes. A magnificent piece, replete with impressive technique and intriguing iconography as well as inherently beautiful jade. Size: 1.5" W x 2.875" H (3.8 cm x 7.3 cm); 3.375" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private J. Leff collection, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA. Mr. Leff was a famous collector, and pieces from his collection have been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Frick Art Museum.
