"The Chemical Catechism, with Notes, illustrations, and Experiments", Samuel Parkes Printed for the Author, Published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy, London, first issue of the Eighth Edition. [‘1818’ is imprinted on the title page. The Preface to the 8th edition is dated December 1817]. The text is revised and adopted to the scientific stand of the 1817 including John Dalton’s theory. In the Bibliography of works used Samuel Parkes also includes 1817 published journal articles and books; illustrated with fold-out plate.

Marbled hard boards, leather spine and corners [some wear and rounded corners, leather creases between spine and boards [see photos]; 5.3/4" x 9.1/4"; fold-out plate instead of the front endpaper, “Joh Chapman //??" is ink written on the verso of the plate, 622 pages, untrimmed page edges, a little foxing, good+/ very good condition.

Samuel Parkes (1761-1825) was a British manufacturing chemist, now remembered for his Chemical Catechism. The first edition of Parkes's manual of chemistry was issued in 1806 and brought him a reputation, and honors from learned societies. The Chemical Catechism was written for the education of his daughter, and lent in manuscript to others. After it was translated into Russian, the Emperor of Russia sent him a valuable ring. In 1817 the Highland Society voted him a silver inkstand for an essay on kelp and barilla. He received a silver cup from the Horticultural Society of Scotland for a paper on the uses of salt in gardening.
