For many, this lot will epitomize the style of the 1930s. The reference 130 was produced following Charles-Henri and Jean Stern’s take-over of Patek Philippe in 1932. Clearly inspired by the reference 96 and prior to that the officer watches, the 130 were the first chronographs the company produced that received a specific reference number.
The present lot, made in steel, is one of only a few hundred produced in this metal and much fewer still are those fitted with such numerals. In superb condition this watch has several very rare and beautiful features. The dial sympathetically cleaned by Patek during a servicing is further enhanced with applied Breguet numerals that are confirmed on the Extract from the Archives.
The case is in exceptional condition with crisp lines and lugs with their fullest proportions which are crisp and downturned. The case is also free of any corrosion or imperfections of any kind. It is interesting to note that the lugs of the stainless steel version are different from the yellow, pink or white gold examples. Their slightly thicker but shorter design gives the watch a rather tonneau-shaped design and a more sportive and robust look.
