Paul Evans
"Sculpture Front" Wall Cabinet

circa 1965
produced by Paul Evans Studio, Lambertville, New Jersey
welded and patinated steel, brass, colored pigments, painted wood
21 x 34¼ x 19½ in. (53.3 x 87 x 49.5 cm)

Condition Report:
Overall in very good condition. The sculpted elements are all in well-preserved condition and present with superb polychrome decorations. The metal elements overall present with surface irregularities and great texture which are inherent to the artist's practice. The metal with light oxidation throughout, which is consistent with age and common for such works, as well as scattered surface scratches and occasional small losses to the enamel particularly concentrated to the edges. The textural metal surface and heavily sculpted door fronts present with light soiling concentrated to the recessed contours of the design.
The door presents misaligned with the cabinet, lower on the proper left side and likely from use over time and the weight of the door. The door front presents with a slight curvature overall, from the time of making, not distracting and enhancing the artistic nature of the piece. The proper left side with three slightly more pronounced edge indentations, the largest measuring 3 in. long and not visually distracting.

Catalogue Note:
The present "Sculpture Front" wall cabinet is a remarkable example of the iconic design style developed by Paul Evans in the 1960s. A master craftsman of the Post-war American Studio Craft movement, Evans developed a groundbreaking visual language that fused form, function and artistic expression. His work during the 1960s explored the boundary between furniture and sculpture, and the present lot is a premier example of this fusion. The cabinet’s doors are made from welded steel which presents a symmetrical geometric pattern of alternating surface treatments. The spaces are either deep gold or russet red and are welded with different surface patterns creating a rich, multi-layered and striking appearance rarely seen in design until this time. Each cabinet produced is unique and assiduously crafted. This body of work was highly influential to the furniture industry and established Evans as one of the leading furniture designers of his time. His welded cabinets remain highly sought after and are recognized as some of the most important works of American furniture design from the mid-20th century. The present lot stands out among "Sculpture Front" cabinets as a more compact and uncommon example, presenting a distinct chance to acquire a refined and distinctive "Sculpture Front" wall cabinet.
