BARTOLI, Pietro Santi (1615-1700, artist). Recueil de peintures antiques trouvées à Rome. Paris: Didot l'aîné for Molini and Lamy, 1783-1787. [Bound with:] RIVE, l'Abbé Joseph-Jean (1730-1791). Histoire critique de la pyramide de Caïus Cestius. Paris: Didot l'aîné for Molini and Lamy, 1787.
Deluxe issue of the second edition, on large paper with plates present in two states; this copy in full red morocco. The first edition of this work was illustrated with 33 plates and published in an edition of 30 copies. This second edition was enlarged by the addition of Rive's Histoire critique de la pyramide de Caïus Cestius, and, according to Brunet, was printed in an edition of only 100 copies on paper, 15 on vellum, and 6 on papier de Hollande. Copies of these various issues exist with differing permutations of text and plates (for example, without the half-titles or with 6 duplicate plates in the second work). The color plates are particularly beautiful; see for reference the digitized copy of this work at NYPL. Brunet I, 682; Cicognara 3598.
Two volumes, this copy with text for the two works bound together in a separate volume from the plates, folio (508 x 325mm). Half-titles for the first work, second volume half-title bound with the plates. 55 engraved plates comprising those numbered I-LIV, including one double-page and one double-page and folding, all but one of these plates, pl. 35, is present in two states: one printed in colors and hand-colored and another printed in black, these are bound to face each other and with original tissue guards; one engraved plate in the text volume (occasional minor spotting, a few plates lightly oxidized from an old color stabilizer). Contemporary red morocco gilt, spine gilt with raised bands and green morocco lettering pieces, all edges gilt (minor scuffing).
