Pieter Andreas was born in Paris as the son of the Flemish landscape painter Pieter Rijsbrack. He emigrated to England shortly after 1722 and there advanced to become a successful topographical painter. His patrons included the Earl of Burlington, a great supporter of the arts, who also commissioned musical compositions from Georg Friedrich Händel. Alongside views, Rijsbrack also painted hunt still lifes such as the present work, which shows game birds with bright plumage against a landscape backdrop.
