Pieter van Anraedt (1675-1699) - Portrait of Margaretha Barbara de Sandra

[ translate ]

This imposing Dutch portrait, which dates from the second half of the 17th century, is a characteristic work of Pieter van Anraedt (1675-1699) . The sitter is Margaretha Barbara de Sandra (1651-1679) who was portrayed by the artist on another occasion as well (Christie's, New York, 16 October 1997, lot n. 60) . Margaretha was the daughter of the wealthy Amsterdam merchant Hendrick de Sandra, who lent money to, among others, John Casimir of Poland, receiving a noble title in return, and was also made a knight of the Order of St Michael by the King of France.

Pieter van Anraedt was a Dutch Golden Age painter of history scenes and portraits. According to the RKD he was born in Utrecht but trained in Deventer, where he was influenced by Gerard ter Borch. Arnold Houbraken mentions that this painter was very friendly with Jan van der Veen, a poet. He married his daughter Antonia and moved to Amsterdam in the rampjaar 1672, when the French army attacked the city. Then he won a commission to paint the regents of the Oudezijds huiszitten house on Leprozengracht. This piece was highly admired by Houbraken in 1718, but attributed to Bol. Soon after painting this group portrait, Anraedt returned to Deventer, where he died. His works come up rarely for sale but are conserved in world-class museums, including the Rijksmuseum.

We thank Prof. Rudi Ekkart for his help in cataloguing this lot.

The present portrait is sold unframed. Upon request, the rather massive (and heavy!) gilt frame shown in the photographs can be sent as a gift to the buyer should they cover the additional shipping costs. In any case, no responsibility will be taken for any damage occurred to the frame during shipping.
