Pietro di Giovanni Bonacorsi, called Perino del Vaga

[ translate ]

(Florence 1501–1547) and
Luzio Romano, called Luzio Luzzi
(active in Rome c. 1519–1582)

Neptune riding his chariot; the infant-god Zeus riding the goat, presumably Rhea (or a nymph?), inscribed “Pierino”, pen and brown ink over black chalk, on laid paper, 29 x 22 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Collection Baron Auguste Rey de Villet (1864-1934), Boulange-sur-Seine/ Paris (Lugt 2200a); His sale, Hollstein & Puppel, Berlin, 4th May 1931, lot 1245; auction, Max Perl, Berlin, 30th June 1932, lot 704; Private collection, Italy.

We are grateful to Dr. Maria Cristina Chiusa for the scientific support. A written information (18th August 2021) is available.

The sheet shows two episodes from the lives of gods Neptun and Zeus in two scenes on top of each other: on top of the sheet Zeus is rendered as the infant-god, riding the goat accompanied by either Rhea or the nymph Amalthea. The lower scene shows Neptune in his chariot, drawn by four horses. The two episodes may have been part of a larger narrative cycle with mythological protagonists in a fresco which they may have prepared.
The depictions recall iconographically and morphologically figures of the fresco The Fall of the Giants in the Palazzo del Principe Andrea Doria in Fassolo (Genova), which Perino del Vaga executed between 1530 und 1532. In 1527 the artist was invited by Andrea Doria to collaborate in the decoration of the palace, where Perino held a significant role in the arrangement of the overall concept and in the compositional harmonization of the murals. It is therefore likely that the drawing may have been made by another artist who participated in the preparation for one of the frescos in the palace. While the morphology of the horses of Neptune’s chariot recall drawings by Perino such as „Apollo in his sun chariot“, which is preserved in the Art Institute, Chicago (Inv. 1922. 736) and also recall two studies being kept in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Inv. 5013 verso; RF 352 recto, „Etudes de figures, d‘animaux vrais ou fantastiques et de motifs ornamentaux de grotesques“ and „Trois études de cheveaux, études d‘un corps d‘homme et d’une coupole“) there are also stylistic resemblances with the graphic work by Luzzio Luzzi who collaborated closely with Perino in the decoration of the palace. The figure of Rhea or the nymph in the top scene is comparable with the “Design for a Decorative Frieze with Alternation of Cartouches and Winged Putti” in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. 52.570.132). For the fresco of the palace see: L. Stagno, “Il ciclo periniano del palazo del Principe: vicende, tecniche e restauri”, in: Perino del Vaga: prima, durante, dopo: atti delle Giornate internahzionali di studio, Genova, 26/27th May 2001, Palazzo Doria del Principe, Genova 2004, pp. 96-105.
