[ translate ]

\Artist: Pittore Lombardo del 17° Secolo
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 119_151_5_cm
Antique oil on canvas, 18th century, portrait of a man with a lute. A painting of the highest quality and intense pictorial and compositional force, it best expresses the artist's ability to portray the subject, richly dressed according to the fashion of the time, distinguished by the combination of black and white and shirts with very wide sleeves. The style of the painting, its high quality and pictorial material, allow us to date it to the second half of the seventeenth century and in relation to the Lombard art of Evaristo Baschenis (1607 - 1677) , an artist considered the inventor of a genre that originated the "Bergamo style": various imitators and followers of Baschenis, first of all devoted themselves to replicating the author's paintings, then they created their own works "in the manner" of the artist. Framed with beautiful and quite recent frame, which is golden and lacquered, decorated with leaves pattern. The painting is in more than fair overall condition, considering its age. It has recently undergone a cleaning that removed old layers of protective varnish that was definitely yellowed and dirty, as well as some old sparse repainting, mainly on the face and in the sky behind the image. There is some peeling and a few defects of the surface, some of which have been slightly repaired, in a conservative way. There is a fine craquelure, compatible with age, and the original canvas has been relined and does not require further intervention. It looks like the stretcher was replaced, probably when it was relined. Canvas size: 132 x 100. 5 cm. Frame size: 151 x 119 cm. Shipping via insured express courier and packaged with the utmost care.
