Gilded wooden frame and worked (defects) : Interesting oil painting on good quality canvas, depicting a female portrait, made by a talented artist active in the second half of the nineteenth century. The work, unsigned, depicts a young woman placed in three quarters and portrayed with a rich and highly tailored dress, made in a dark blue fabric with subtle embroidery, and on the neck a fabric lace with a pendant jewel carried with casual elegance. With equal contempt, the face catalyses the viewer's attention, adhering to precise Renaissance standards of beauty - of the Venetian school - as revealed by the high forehead, the thin eyelashes, the lively look of the black eyes, and the black hair styled in an elegant and well composed. The portrait - with all probability - illustrates a noblewoman from high society, represented with an elegant and authoritative posture, and rich in family jewels, such as necklaces and earrings of precious stones, a typical feature of the portraits of important subjects of the period. in particular between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. From a stylistic point of view, the canvas in question here represents a profound intensity of expression which, flanked by the romantic meditative character, not shy of symbolist reminiscences, and is accompanied by the cutting of the image completely characteristic for the setting, through the fusion of chromatic masses - with vibrant and detailed brushstrokes - giving us a visual solidity that is rarely seen in Italian 19th century painting. The figures of this painting that is influenced by romanticism and impressionism but which is also declined with a completely subjective pleasure for that past that recalls the works of the Venetian school of the seventeenth century. To increase this sensation of rapidity of the impression, the artist uses the pre-impressionist technique, based on the perception of reality and not on the expression of his concept. Regarding its state of conservation, the work is in fairly fair general conditions considering the age of the painting; the pictorial surface shows a dirty paint, caused by time, signs that testify the years of the work. The patina is in a fairly conservative state, and with the study of the magnifying glass, the thickness of the pigments and some characteristics of the paint layer, compatible with the painting of the time, can be observed in the painting surface. In grazing sunlight, on the other hand, the characteristics of the color applied with impasto, and of the trend of the brushstroke, are visible, such as: relief, direction, curvature and crackle. The measures of the canvas are cm. 62 x 50. The work is set in a beautiful gilded frame from the coeval period (antique?) (The frame measures are approx. 75 x 64 x 5 cm, there are defects) .
