This eighteenth-century painting represents a violent clash between knights of ancient times, and is of fantastic dynamism and great visual impact. The two main characters respectively ride a white piebald horse and the other a runaway black one. The two knights pierce the fallen enemies with their spears and while the battle flares up in the background, the leaden sky seems to underline the drama of the event. Flemish painters studied the Neapolitan battalists such as Aniello Falcone and others extensively, and their influence is clearly noted in this painting. The work measures cm. 109 x 92. 5 including the beautiful gilded frame perhaps from the 19th century, and cm. 99 x 82 canvas only. Professional cleaning and restoration brought out the beautiful original colors of the painting (as shown in the last photo) .
