Portrait of Polykarp (von) Leyser the Elder or Polykarp Leyser I, (1552-1610), engraved by Moritz Bodenehr [1665-1749, Dresden], undated, circa 1685, signed in plate "M. Bodenehr sculps. Dressdae.". Engraved inscription in the ribbon: "Nat, d. 18.Marty A. 1552. Denat, d. 22.Febr. A. 1610." The inscription beneath the portrait: "Polycarpus Lyserus D. / Weiland Church. Sachss. Ober=Hoff=Prediger, Beicht=Vater und Kirchen=Rath."

Moritz Bodenehr [1665, Freiburg - 1749, Dresden] was the official engraver of the Saxon Royal Court in Dresden. He was trained in the workshop of his father, engraver Johann Georg Bodenehr [1631-1714]. His brothers Gabriel [1664-1758] and Georg Konrad [1673-1710] were also engravers.Reference: Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, 1903, Vol.I, 152.

Polykarp (von) Leyser the Elder or Polykarp Leyser I [1552-1610], German Lutheran Theologian; "celebrated divine of the Augsburg Confession,"; he studied until 1570 at the University of Tuebingen; 1573 preacher in Goellersdorf, Austria. In 1576, he was admitted as Doctor of Divinity in Tuebingen. Prince Elector of Saxony appointed him minister of the Church of Wittenberg in 1577 and 1589 Superintendent in Braunschweig. He returned to Wittenberg in 1593. Polykarp was one of the main contributors to the 'Book of Concord'. In 1594, Polycarpus became the pastor of the Saxon royal court in Dresden. He published several books. His main works are "Historia Dominicae" and "Commentarium in Genesim."Reference: Flloyd, 1760, Biographica, Vol.II, LYS.

Leyser was born in Winnenden. He married Elisabeth, the daughter of Lucas Cranach the Younger, and their children included Polykarp Leyser II (1586-1633), another theologian. This made him the founder of a dynasty of theologians, as great-grandfather of Polykarp Leyser III (1656-1725) and great-great-grandfather of Polykarp Leyser IV (1690-1728).

He wrote more than sixty theological works and an extensive corpus of sermons. He also dealt with the literary controversies of his time, cultivating an extensive correspondence of 200 written by him and 5000 written to him - an extensive selection from it was first published by his great-grandson Polycarp Leyser III as "Sylloge epistolarum" in 1706.

Provenance: This plate comes from a collection of engravings bound by the German art collector "A.L." The finalized collection of hand-numbered engravings is dated 1762 which provides additional warranty that the engravings are authentic and created prior to 1762; auctioned in London, UK.
