Port Ellen distillery, founded 1825, had been silent for 40 years when it reopened in 1967. In 1983 the distillery closed again after sixteen years of production, this time seemingly for good. In 2017 the owners Diageo announced plans to re-open Port Ellen. As no equipment and only a few buildings remained the distillery had to be reconstructed with help of old drawings. The revived distillery reopened in March 2024.
