Plate size: 20 x 26 in / Sheet size: 22 x 30 in inch Silver graphic frame;
The large-format lithograph by Pablo Picasso, so outstanding an artist of the 20th century, exudes the immediacy of a great drawing. Its subject is a family scene of the kind the Spaniard took up again and again. The members are abstracted to varying degrees, which adds virtuosity to the composition. Picasso opens the scene to a psychological reading; the mysterious tension between the protagonists is intense. Picasso's highly aesthetic qualities as a draughtsman are evident not least in the ingenious stylisation - for example, the characteristically mask-like faces. In Mougins near Cannes, Picasso created a series of lithographs and linocuts on the theme of "Portrait de Famille Ingresque" between 21 June and 6 July 1962. His repeated treatment of this composition shows the special significance it had for him at the time. The inspiration, as the title suggests, was a drawing of the Forestier family by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres from 1806, which Picasso knew from the Louvre. Georges Bloch, Pablo Picasso.
