Portrait of Colonel The Hon. Charles Hamilton (1727-1806), Thomas Gainsborough, R.A.

[ translate ]

Thomas Gainsborough, R.A.
Sudbury 1727-1788 London
Portrait of Colonel The Hon. Charles Hamilton (1727-1806)

inscribed upper left: Honble Colonel Hamilton
oil on canvas
canvas: 30 by 24 3/4 in.; 76.3 by 62.8 cm.
framed: 37 5/8 by 32 1/2 in.; 95.6 by 82.5 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas has an old glue relining and remains stable. The paint surface is nicely preserved under an even, glossy varnish. There are some areas of craqueleure in the background and at the top of the sitter's head but it is not bothersome. The brushy quality of the artist's painting style, particularly in the background and the sitter's collar, is still evident and nicely preserved, as are the thick impasto details on some of the costume. Under ultraviolet light the varnish casts an even, milky tone over the painting. There are a few spots of inpainting in the red jacket at center, but these are minimal and not noticeable to the naked eye. Overall the painting is in good condition and can be hung as is. Offered in a carved giltwood and painted frame.
