Portrait of a 19th C Gentleman, possibly Southern

American School, early to mid 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, possibly Cary Gilbert of South Carolina and later Tennessee, depicted in late middle age wearing a dark coat and tie, with dark hair. Painting has been cut down is framed with double sided non-glare glass in a contemporary ebonized frame with speckled gilt sight edge. Canvas - 19"H x 13 3/4"W. Frame - 28"H x 23"W.

PROVENANCE: Descended in the family of Cary Gilbert, born Newberry, SC 1793, died Giles County, Tennessee, 1865. According to his wife Eunice's obituary, the couple came to Tennessee circa 1828 and had nine children.
Condition Report: Painting has been cut down and lacks stretchers. The canvas is housed between two sheets of non glare glass. 4" tear with small hole at chest area, 1 1/2" tear at collar area, 1 1/2" tear in background near sitter's temple, several small patches en verso, flaking at right lower side, craquelure and grime throughout.
