Lombard School, mid-17th Century
Portrait of a gentleman, standing three-quarter-length, in green embroidered costume, holding a plumed hat and a spear

oil on canvas
unframed: 129.5 x 96.2 cm.; 51 x 37⅞ in.
framed: 155.4 x 122.7 cm.; 61¼ x 48⅜ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined and the paint surface is relatively clean with a slightly discoloured and uneven varnish. There is a degree of wear in parts of the background and some of the darker pigments. Much of the impasto of the white pigments remains intact. There is retouching visible to a few repaired damages, notably: one to the right of his nose approx. 10cm, one in a triangle shape in the upper right corner approx. 15cm., a small restoration in his forehead approx. 3 x 1cm., and to a vertical repaired tear in the right of his face. There are further small and scattered visible retouchings (mostly in the background). The stretcher mark long the upper margin is slightly visible with more pronounced craquelure - in fact the craquelure in the upper half of the background has become slightly more distinct. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals the vertical repaired tear in the right of his face to extend to the top edge of his hat and with two perpendicular horizontal repaired tears measuring approx. 50 and 30cm. There are some retouchings in his right hand. In overall fairly good condition.
