Portrait of a young man, half-length, said to be Peter Speirs, John Russell

[ translate ]

John Russell
Guildford 1745 - 1806 Hull
Portrait of a young man, half-length, said to be Peter Speirs

signed and dated lower left: J Russell Pinxt / 1767
oil on canvas
canvas: 30 by 25 1/4 in.; 76.2 by 64.1 cm.
framed: 36 1/4 by 31 1/2 in.; 92 by 80 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. The image reads well under a clear varnish. Signs of a previous campaign of restoration that have now discolored are visible to the naked eye, most notably, in the sitter's left cheek. This is not distracting to the overall composition. Under UV inspection, the varnish appears evenly distributed and various areas of retouching are visible, for example, in the upper right corner of the background and the torso of the sitter. The painting is in good condition and can be hung in its current state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
