Property from an Important Private Collection An unidentified text signed Baba Shah Isfhani, Safavid Persia, second half 16th century, Persian manuscript on polished paper, 23 leaves plus 8 fluy-leaves, 9 lines to the page written in black elegant nasta’liq, ruled in gold, black and blue, the outer margins with interlacing gold scrolls, important words in red and blue, f.1b with gold and polychrome heading, in a brown leather binding with gilt stamped medallions and associated cotton bag, text panel: 11 x 6cm.; 18.8 x 11.6cm. Note: Baba Shah (d.1587-88) was originally from Isfahan, he was a student of Mir Ali Harawi (d.1544) and later lived and died in Baghdad. His recorded works are dated between 977 and 994 AH/ 1569-87 AD (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, vol.I, Tehran, 1345 sh, pp.85-91). Among his works survived are an anthology of poems by Babafghani now in the Malek National Library, Tehran, inv.no.1393.04.05915/003; a bifolium from Jami’s Yusuf and Zulaykha is in the Brooklyn Museum, New York, inv.no.44.218.5a-b and an anthology of poems by Muhammad Ghazali Mashhadi, offered at Sotheby’s London, 10 June 2020, lot 26.
