Proto Nazca Textile Trophy Head Fringe

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. An impressive and quite lengthy trophy head textile fringe comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of maroon, marigold, sage, teal, chocolate brown, and cream hues. The textile depicts 27 trophy heads (as opposed to munecas - "dolls" in Spanish) that are attached to a colorful band panel beneath which are 39 lower bodies. Each trophy head exhibits thick locks of sweeping brown hair and stylized lower bodies which are conjoined with that of their neighbors. The mantle is mounted against a black, museum-quality linen backing. Size: 61.75" W x 7.25" H (156.8 cm x 18.4 cm); 81" W x 23" H (205.7 cm x 58.4 cm) with black fabric mount

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
