Published Greek Daunian Polychrome Tripod Jar

Magna Graecia, South Italic, Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery olpe with a flat bottom, a globular body with a corseted neckline, a wide discoid rim surrounding a circular mouth, and a tall handle joining rim to body, all sitting upon 3 petite legs with extended feet. The cream-slipped vessel boasts densely painted black and orange bands of varying thickness, a singular strip of a lozenge motif, and vertical and fretted striations along the feet. The rim is ringed with concentric circles, while the handle is decorated with horizontal stripes. Size: 4.3" in diameter x 7" H (10.9 cm x 17.8 cm)

Daunian society was a mixture of native Italians and Greeks who had settled in the area. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. The shapes of the vessels remained strongly influenced by the Italians - this one, for example, is a form of the Greek kyathos, or dipper, with a flat, long, looping handle, but the wideness of the strap is purely Daunian.

This example was published in "The Farwell Collection Volume VI" by Franklin P. Johnson (Cambridge, Mass.: University of Chicago, 1953) in figure 15 and described as catalogue number XVI on page 18.

Condition Report: Front handle restored and small part of rim restored. Repair to back of handle with break line visible. Chip to exterior wall and some minor abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining pigments.
