RARE AND UNIQUE FULL-BODY TIN STANDING HORSE WEATHER
c. Late 19th to early 20th century. American. The standing or walking horse with cast zinc ears, bridle, reins and molded saddle. The full molded tail realistically posed. The horse retains good original gold gilting and traces of early paint. Offered with museum stand. Purportedly, the weather vane was mounted above the carousel of the Atlantic Highlands Park, New Jersey. Whether on top of the carousel center or the peak of the roof that usually protected these carousels from the elements, is unclear. The carousel was dismantled between 1920 - 1930, at which time a workman retrieved it for himself. It remained with his family until the 1950s, when it was sold to an antiques dealer from Red Bank, New Jersey, who retained it for his collection. He eventually sold it in the 1970s to a collector who in turn sold it to a friend who was an antiques dealer/adviser. He is the author of the early history of the horse. The current owners purchased the horse from this individual. A photocopy of the letter accompanies this lot. From a private west coast collection. Surfaces as described. Old shallow dents along right side of body. Corrosion pitting to end of tail. Otherwise very good. Size: 33" T. x 32" L.; 36" T. with stand. Condition: (Very Good). Dimensions: 35 - 1/2" x 32" x 6 - 3/4".
