RARE GANDHARA MARBLE HEAD OF BODHISATTVA

Ca. 200 AD. A fabulous carved marble head of Bodhisattva with a round face and fleshy features, heavy-lidded eyes, long earlobes with segmented earrings, diadem to the brow with cockade; It is very rare to see Gandhara heads in marble; It is possible to assume that this head was a part of an elaborate scene on a Stuppa; usually depciting the face of a donor as symbol of his piety. Condition: Very good; mounted on a custom-made stand.Size:325mmx150mm;over 6kg; Provenance: From an old British collection, acquired on the UK art market in the 1980s.
