RARE VIKING LUGGED SPEAR 9th-10th CENTURY

Distinctive form with fuller profile than the Frankish examples of the period, See De Norske Vikingesverd, Petersen, page 23, figure 8. That work is the benchmark for identification of Viking swords though it is sometimes overlooked that the study is specifically weapons of Norway. (Viking swords found in England are identified by Wheeler type.) Thus it may be concluded that this spear is either made in Norway or of the type specific to Norwegian Vikings. 17 7/8” length with tapered octagonal socket with integral opposing base lugs which in this form, are particularly low to the socket edge. Medially ridged leaf shaped blade of form fuller at the point than Frankish examples. Professionally conserved excavated condition.
