REMARKABLE REGISTERED MAIL TO SPAIN; 29 July 1875 E to Andalucia franked 1/-, 3d & 1d tied by barred 'r' cancels and with oval London reg. d.s. on front. The only example of registered mail to Spain in the pre-UPU period recorded by us. Important exhibition item and a v.fine three-colour franking representing the double 6d rate via France plus 4d reg. fee. Note: Despite Spain joining the UPU four weeks earlier, it had no practical effect until France joined on 1.1.1876 causing rates to remain at the same levels and in either case no earlier example of registered mail to Spain is indicated in our records.
