PORTRAIT OF JOSEPH LEESON, LATER 2ND EARL OF MILLTOWN (1730-1801), FULL-LENGTH, STANDING BY A CLASSICAL URN, A LANDSCAPE BEYOND
oil on canvas
76.4 x 63.5 cm.; 30⅛ x 25 in.
Condition Report:
The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are very tiny pin-prick losses scattered throughout, most notably in the upper right and lower left corners. Discoloured retouching is visible to previous losses along the stretcher marks on the upper and left sides, and in further areas in the sky in the upper left corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals further scattered, small retouchings in the background on the left and around the legs of the figure also to disguise the appearance of previous losses. In overall fairly good condition.
