Robert Mapplethorpe often gave these small tulip prints to friends as a thank you. This particular example was given to
to his dear friend Anne McDonald (1942–2018), founder of an alternative gallery Artspace in San Francisco and contributing editor of Artforum. This work speaks to the important role McDonald played in the art community and the meaningful bond she formed with countless artists, like Mapplethorpe.
