ROLEX
Daytona, Ref. 6263
A Stainless Steel Chronograph Wristwatch with “Sigma” Dial and Oyster Bracelet, Circa 1974

Dial: black
Caliber: cal. 727 manual, 17 jewels
Case: stainless steel, screw-down back
Closure: stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet and folding clasp
Dimensions: 37 mm, bracelet circumference approx. 180 mm
Signed: case, dial and movement
Case numbers: ref. 6263 / serial: 3731534

Introduced in the early 1970s, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6263 was one of the last stainless steel manually-wound Daytona chronographs in production (along with its steel-bezel sibling reference) until Rolex replaced it with automatic versions in 1988. Among the already highly coveted vintage Daytona references, this particular 6263 example stands out for several reasons. First, its black dial includes two Greek sigma letters flanking the “T SWISS T” text below the 6 o’clock marker to denote that the indexes and hands are made of white gold. Furthermore, it does not include the “DAYTONA” name anywhere on the dial. Finally, the dial is signed “Rolex Oyster Cosmograph” to signify that the Oyster case was water resistant to 100 meters, thanks in part to its screw-down chronograph pushers. The pairing of the sought-after 6263 reference with a rare “Sigma” dial that lacks the Daytona label makes this vintage example a highly-desirable piece for collectors.

Condition Report:
This vintage ref. 6263 Daytona is in excellent overall condition and has a serial number engraving that corresponds to an estimated production date of approximately 1974. The original bezel has very minor dents along the outer edge and shows slight signs of wear that are consistent with age. The original matte black “Sigma” dial is in exceptional overall condition, with all of its luminous dots still present and intact.

Sotheby’s Watches Department is pleased to offer Condition Reports to potential purchasers. A Condition Report is an opinion describing the lot in more detail with regard to, but not limited to the general condition, quality of the watches and/or other relevant information.
