Only a limited number of Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 watches with the signature of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said have reappeared in the public sphere, and fewer still have been available at auction.
This watch was recently serviced at Rolex Geneva where the originality of the dial and the serial batch number were verified; this Rolex is characterized by the serial number 3’566’925, the lowest among those bearing the signature “Qaboos” on the dial, even preceding the exemplar sold by Christie’s by two units and the one at auction by Phillips (and published in the book “A Journey into the Deep” by John Goldberger and Daniel Bourn) by fifty-two units.
The Sea-Dweller 1665 offered here bears the signature “Qaboos” in red at 6 o’clock, instead of the usual indication of maximum depth. This is one of the three variations that His Majesty Qaboos bin Said Al Said offered to British SAS officers as a token of appreciation and recognition for helping him defeat the Dhofar rebellion.
It is estimated that less than 100 Rolexes were customized through the English dealer Asprey; these exemplars are identified by the effigy of the khanjar and the two crossed scimitars printed in red and subsequently in gold, with a very limited number decorated with only the signature of Qaboos bin Said Al Said in red, a color which (present in the national flag together with white and green) symbolizes the battle against invaders.
