ROME DÉBUT DU XVIIIe SIÈCLE
Gilded
wood and glass
H. 125 cm, W. 111 cm
This rare model of carved and gilded wood mirror is composed of a great abundance of vegetal motifs, characteristic of the baroque art of the end of the 17th century. Sunflower flowers emerge amidst large acanthus leaves and scrolls. The bevelled ice is framed with ribboned rushes. On the sides appear thick, sinuous branches that blend in perfectly with the surrounding plant environment. Two windings punctuate the damping. This type of decoration characteristic of late 17th and early 18th century mirrors is found in a mirror kept in a private collection and reproduced in Enrico Colle's Il Mobile Barocco in
Italia - Arredi e Decorazioni d'Interni dal 1600 al 1738, p. 111 (fig. 1).
Symmetry, foliage, scattered sunflowers and damping are similar.
Our work is strongly inspired by the drawings of mirrors made around 1660-1670 by Giovanni Paolo Schor (fig. 2), a pupil of Bernini and his followers such as Filippo Passarini (fig. 3).
