[ translate ]

Rare antique painted folk art black Americana shoe shine trade figure. Measures 40 1/2" tall including base. Black man is a wonderful old carving with original paint. Cut from a block of layered pine boards and pegged limbs. Uncle Sam outfit. Remnants of brown painted flesh. Special nails for suspender buttons. Flat head nails for shirt buttons. Base with sign for 14c Newspapers looks to be a later addition. Feet of black man look fashioned to sit on an upward slope . Wood of base looks newer but to some degree original as the figure may have been converted from use at shoe shine operation to a newspaper stand. Box in black man's hand also looks newer than the body wood. Paint has been scrubbed down in some kind of cleaning. A slight crack through one layer of board at the left thigh. No major damage at all with a lot of fragile features.
