Rare Benjamin-Sellar "Thumezy" Casting Reel
A satin finish German silver frame casting reel with a unique thumb activated free spool and drag, bridging the side plates. Issued patent number 1189232 on July 4, 1916, the invention of Reuben B. Benjamin of Chicago, Ill was not a commercially successful casting reel, lasting only a few years before production ended. Benjamin assigned the rights of his patent to the Benjamin-Sellar Mfg. Co., also from Chicago, to produce the reels, made in two versions, this being the second, circa 1914. Stamped on the tail plate "Patents Pending", this VG+ condition example has screw off end caps, light soiling and a few rubs/scratches to the end caps. The thumb activated brake and free spool works well, as does the sliding click on the tail plate. One of the more unusual looking casting reels, certain to stand out among a vintage casting reel collection.
