Rare Early Walasse Ting (1929-2010) Ink Brush Painting, 1950s

Walasse Ting (b. Shanghai 1929, d. New York 2010) Untitled (Birds and flowers), 1950s. Signed: Ding Xiongquan (Walasse Ting) and with the artist's red stamps. Indian ink on paper. Size: 70'' x 33'', 178 x 84 cm (sight); 82'' x 37'', 208 x 94 cm (scroll). Provenance: From the collection of Isadore M. and Nancy A. Marder. Acquired directly from the artist.The Marders were introduced to Walasse Ting in 1957 by Ilya and Resia Schor, two prominent New York artists and close friends. At the time, Ting had recently arrived in the U.S. from Paris, having fled Communist China. His family was targeted by the communist government, and Ting himself had a price on his head. Ilya Schor encouraged Marder to pay attention to Ting, recognizing him as a talented artist. As a result, Marder purchased a watercolor portrait from Ting depicting two old friends reunited after a long separation. He also assisted the artist by taking him shopping for clothes and offering him a stipend of $100 per month. In 1957 and 1958, the Marders, along with another couple, owned a summer camp, where Ting served as the arts counselor during the summer of 1958. During this time, Ting introduced the Marders to other notable artists, including Sam Francis and Karel Appel. Their friendship lasted from their first meeting until Ting’s death in Amsterdam.
