Rare G.W. Gayle & Son Aluminum Trout Reel
Built entirely by hand, as advertised in a 1937 catalog, this little 2 1/4" diameter trout size reel weighs less than 3oz., and features rim knurling on both head and tail plate. With a brass spool arbor, solid nickel silver pillars, screws and handle counter weight, and rear mounted sliding click switch that per Gayle "is of just the right tension for fly fishing. The condition is only about G+/VG- due to surface rubs, a slightly twisted foot and moderate to heavy spool flange corrosion that needs to be addressed to avoid further deterioration. Handmade Gayle fly reels are seldom offered for sale. *Information obtained from "Fishing Reel Makers of Kentucky" by Vernon and Stewart.
