Rare Greek Cypriot Greyware Ring Vessel

[ translate ]

Greece, Cyprus, Geometric Period, ca. 900 to 750 BCE. A rare greyware vessel in the shape of a ring, with a delicate spout with an everted rim projecting from one side. A narrow strap handle emerges from one side of the spout and flows seamlessly into the shoulder. The surface is burnished to a light gloss. Size: 5.95" W x 7.5" H (15.1 cm x 19 cm); 8.4" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.

According to the Athens Museum of Cycladic Art, scholars are still unsure if ring-shaped vessels originated in Cyprus or if they have their origin in the Neast East, based on corresponding examples from the 12th to 11th centuries BCE from ancient Megiddo. It is also unknown if they were used in everyday life or if they were reserved for religious rituals and burials. Whatever their origins and purpose, they are a very rare form!

See a similar example at the Athens Museum of Cycladic Art (Z0624).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
