Rare Jalisco Pottery Seated Figure w/ Dog Head

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An interesting example from ancient West Mexico, a seated figure with sinuous arms wrapped around bent knees. The slender chest is surmounted by sloping shoulders which taper in to the thick neck. The cynocephalic head exhibits intriguing canine-form stylization with a protruding snout adorned with a nose ring, gaunt cheeks beneath puffy, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, tab-shaped ears with incised rings, and a single projecting dog ear with a vertical striation. A rare dog-headed example presented in faded hues of red and black pigment. Size: 2" L x 2.2" W x 3.8" H (5.1 cm x 5.6 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple pieces, with small chips and light restoration along break lines. Small abrasions and nicks to limbs, body, and head, with light softening to some incised details, fading to original pigmentation commensurate with age, and minor encrustations within some recessed areas. Light earthen deposits throughout.
