Rare John A. Ricketts Pump Action Reel

[ translate ]

Issued three patent numbers for his unusual invention between 1912 and 1929, this circa late 1920's model exhibits the improvements described in the 3rd patent, number 1709952, issued on April 23rd, 1929. Some of the notable improvements over his initial design included protection of the line to keep from fouling in the machinery and a "quick" dismount feature that allowed the reel to be easily removed from the rod. The reciprocating reel also features a click drag and line guide, with clear stamping on the reel that reads "J.A. Ricketts - Maker - Rochester, NY - USA", with additional stamp on the protective sleeve over the rack that shows "Ricketts - PATD April 1929 - 1709952". With a thumb activated flat spring on the top of the reel that engaged the clutch to turn the spool, this complex reel is by far one of the most interesting and elusive to come to auction. A photo of this particular reel appears on page 295 of Antique Fishing Reels - 2nd Edition by Steve Vernon, in which he explains that "no two of the several Ricketts reels I have examined have been alike", which illustrates the uniqueness of this example. Mounted on a 37" steel rod, the VG/VG+ condition reel is a bit temperamental at times when reeling, but working the slide will bring the line to the spool. It may be many years before you see another example offered for sale.
