Rare Large Coin Silver Billinghurst Fly Reel

A very rare large size "Billinghurst's Patent Aug. 9, 1859, Rochester NY" marked coin silver birdcage reel, granted just the fourth patent for a fishing reel in the United States and the first for what could be considered a fly reel. William Billinghurst produced this 3 1/4" diameter reel with weight reduction and the ability to dry lines of linen and silk while remaining on the reel in mind. This especially rare version of his work was constructed of coin silver, reportedly given out as prizes during the earliest days of casting competitions. Bearing the single patent date (later models are marked with an additional 1873 patent renewal date) and featuring a full and unaltered foot. The folding handle with rosewood grasp allowed for storing in your pocket or fishing kit. In excellent unpolished condition, a rare opportunity to own one of the most elusive Billinghurst reels produced.
