Origin: Philadelphia
Date: c. mid 19th century
Materials: cotton
Dimensions: 97" x 107" (fits king bed)
Provenance/Additional Info: Fantastic to have the name of the married couple woven in to the coverlet along the bottom portion, a rare find in this type of work. Called candlewick, though this is woven on a loom, not embroidered as in true candlewicks. All details are raised and three dimensional, including classic motifs and configuration seen in this type of work. Perhaps a wedding gift, genealogy possible not done yet. This type of woven candlewick is characterized by its raised motifs all over mostly geometric like stars; some are traditional elements; rare is the weaving in of the complete names of the recipients/owners the Stuarts.
