Rare Romano-Egyptian Terracotta Mold - Bes

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 2nd century CE. A large terracotta mold of a round boss in the form of the face of the god Bes. The mold is rounded, with a short handle-like terminal on one end. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. He was also a fertility symbol, and figures of Bes have been found associated with ritual bathing places in temples, which may have been associated with childbirth, or with ritualized sexual encounters, similar to shrines to the cult of Dionysus. Size: 2.3" L x 5.4" W x 7.1" H (5.8 cm x 13.7 cm x 18 cm)

Condition Report: Four stable cracks in the mold (the pottery is very thick). Motif is very clear on the inside of the mold. Comes with modern clay boss made from the mold.
