Rare Shell-Shaped Ink Palette with Mark

Possibly Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing Reign (1796-1820)

Well modeled as a flattened conch shell with stepped layers depicting the spiraled cone shape, the exterior with blue and white floral decoration, the opening of the shell formed as the sunken well, the white-glazed base with a six-character Jiaqing seal mark in underglaze blue, possibly of the period and with three spur marks. Now mounted on an associated hardwood stand carved with prunis blossoms.

H. 7/8 in., W. 3 1/2 in., D. 2 1/2 in.

Note: An almost identical ink palette was sold at Sotheby's, New York, Important Chinese Art, March 2021, Lot 165 with Jiaqing seal mark for $31,500 including BP and another similar ink palette was sold at Christie's, London, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, May 15, 2012, Lot 317 with Jiaqing underglaze blue six-character seal mark (1796-1820) for 12,500 GBP including BP.

Condition: Some light abrasions and scratches commensurate with age.
