Rare Translated Egyptian Lapis Lazuli Scarab

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Third Intermediate Period, 19th to 21st Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 943 BCE. A rare example of a petite scarab pendant carved from lapis lazuli bearing gorgeous, mottled azure and periwinkle hues. The topside depicts classic insectile features such as a narrow head with a frilled clypeus, slender legs tucked beneath the bulky body, and a folded wing carapace that is incised down the middle; a suspension hole is biconically drilled lengthwise through the body. The underside of the pendant bears a single column of inscribed hieroglyphs that read, "(The god) Amun is Lord of Thebes." Size: 0.7" L x 0.45" W (1.8 cm x 1.1 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Condition Report: Minor abrasions to surfaces and very light encrustations within some recessed areas, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to insectile features and inscribed hieroglyphs.
