Rare illustrated brochure on Brighton, Florida c.1926

[ translate ]

Heading: (Florida)
Author:
Title: Brighton: Nature's Gift to Florida. A Curtiss-Bright Property (wrapper title)
Place Published: [Hialeah, Florida]
Publisher:[Curtiss-Bright Company]
Date Published: c.1926
Description:

[24] pp., mostly half-tone photographs with captions. 19.2x27 cm (7½x10¾"), original printed wrappers.

Rare pictorial brochure promoting the real estate development by the company co-owned by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss, whose interests and enterprises were extensive, playing an important role in the growth of Florida. Curtiss and his partner James Bright were developers in the Florida cities of Hialeah, Miami Springs and Opa-locka, among others, including the municipality of Brighton, whose future seemed bountiful. Sitting on relatively high ground above Lake Okeechobee (safe from hurricane related flooding), it seemed ideal for a farming hub. Curtiss invested a great deal in entertainment destinations as well, including a zoo. However, with the bust in the Florida land boom, the onset of the Great Depression, and the death of Curtiss himself, the grand hopes were never realized, and today Brighton is little more than a ghost town. No copies are listed in OCLC.
Condition Report: Light wear and foxing to wrappers, very good.
