Eleanor Stokley. . Needlework Memorial Sampler. . Probably Tennessee dated 1822. . . . Beautifully executed sampler featuring a central oval cartouche with a monument inscribed "Eleanor Stokleys work 1822", a seated lady, bird, sheep, and a spread winged eagle with olive branches and the word "LIRBERTY" in a stylized circle above its head. The sampler is framed with mirror image birds, butterflies and flowering vines.. . . At the bottom center is a verse entitled THE SMILE OF JESUS, . . . . "Lovely is the face of nature. . Deck'd with Spring's unfolding flow'rs,. . While the sun shows every feature. . Smiling through descending showers:. . . . Birds, with songs the time beguiling,. . Chant their little notes with glee,. . But to see a Saviour smiling,. . Is more soft, more sweet to me!". . . . The poem is from the PANOPLIST for the year ending June, 1806, The Panoplist was a religious monthly magazine printed from 1805 until 1820 edited by Jeremiah Evarts.. . . . Research keeps pointing to an Eleanor (Elinor, Ellen) Stokley that was born 1808 in Del Rio, Cocke Co., TN. Del Rio is in East Tennessee near the North Carolina line. In1822 there were several schools that Eleanor may have attended in TN, NC, or VA. At this point we can say that this is very likely a Tennessee sampler. . . . . Note: Some slight toning on the top right and left edges and two small holes in the background gauze, and a few black stitches missing within the verse. It is in a modern 1/2" gold frame.. . . . Silk on gauze silk; 22" x 21" framed, 21" x 20" sight.
