[ translate ]

Lot Details & Additional Photographs Signed W. W. Holden by Governor William Woods Holden and D. A. Jenkins by Public Treasurer David A. Jenkins, Raleigh, October 1, 1868, issued in New York to finance construction of the Wilmington, Charlotte and Rutherford Railroad, twelve $30 interest payment coupons are visible with the bond maturing in October 1894; illustrated with two allegorical figures flanking a vignette of the North Carolina state capitol building. Presented in a gilt wooden frame.

Framed DOA 17.5 x 21.5 in.

W. W. Holden has long been considered a colorful figure in North Carolina political history. His antebellum pro-states rights leanings were eroded during the Civil War, leading to his becoming a Republican in later years. He was impeached and removed from office in 1871, having earned the enmity of North Carolina's Democratic political establishment and the then-powerful Ku Klux Klan.

Two fold creases with tiny split at the top, else as issued; not examined out of the frame.
