The industrial production with Jacquard looms, which reduced the costs, made it accessible and popular in every home. It features glossy-opaque woven decorations, obtained with various weaves on a shiny background, usually made of satin weave. The patterns are either geometric or stylised. The thread is very fine, smooth and glossy to the touch, with a very dense weave, and contributes to form a fine, delicate and yet compact and resistant fabric. It was formerly made of linen, today it is made of mercerised cotton or synthetic fibres for less valuable products. Originally white, it is also produced in pastel colours and, more rarely, in bright colours in order to fit fashion needs. It is the ultimate fabric used for the manufacture of elegant tablecloths. Nowadays, it can also be a stain-resistant product thanks to a silicone finishing, a treatment that prevents liquids from penetrating fibres.
