Reliquary, Meat San Giuseppe da Copertino (1) - Brass, Glass - Around 1760
A very rare relic containing the flesh of Saint Joseph of Cupertino, the “flying friar”. Very rare because it dates back to the years when he was not canonized yet, but only beatified. (From 1753 to 1767) . Condition as per photos, relic is still intact with obvious signs of ageing. He was beatified in 1753 by Pope Benedict XIV, and canonized in 1767 by Pope Clement XIII. He is the patron saint of Osimo and Copertino, his saint’s day is on September, 18th. According to Catholic tradition, St. Joseph of Copertino is believed to have performed miracles and was prone to intense ecstatic visions that would lead him to levitate: he was brought to trial before the Holy Office and was transferred first to Assisi (1639-1653) , then to Pietrarubbia and finally to Fossombrone (Pesaro 1653-1657) , under the supervision of the Capuchin friars. On 9 July 1657 he was returned to his brethren and sent to Osimo where he died. His body is kept in the crypt of the shrine, inside a golden bronze urn.
