Reliquary with ex ossibus casket - 5 Holy Martyrs - 17th century - Glass, Lacquer, Wood, Silver threads, fabric - mid 17th century
Important reliquary with 5 bones inside a case gilded with gold leaf and covered with black paint. Datable to the second half of the 17th century, Louis XIV period. Baroque Italian manufacture. This is an EX OSSIBUS reliquary. It contains 5 relics of martyrs Saints. Each bone has a cartouche bearing the Latin inscription “Venerandus M(artyr) ”. Some of them have the cartouche of the Saint but are difficult to read. It has 3 wax seals: 2 outer seals that close the case and 1 inner seal to fix the central bone. Internally, it is covered with fine fabric. It comes from an important Italian collection. It has some defects and missing parts due to ageing. The PHOTOS are an integral part of the description.
